He leaves me standing here, still unable to comprehend what he has just been speaking of. His words have shaken me to the core. An orc talking of such things—co-existence, peace, cooperation and progression.

Is this some kind of trick?

They are certainly not words that have been a part of my vocabulary or way of thinking. My language is of resistance and death. As assassin is not trained to speak of peace. The only peace we desire is that granted to humans once we have rid the planet of orcs.

But there was such honesty in his eyes, and passion in his voice. Orcs are many things, and I would never believe I could trust one, but I trusted those things. And I trust that an orc would never be able to act that well—nuance and subtlety are not really known orc traits.

Though, as I have thought since my first day here, Thanos is different to many of them. There is a desire for knowledge and progress, and, despite his fierceness, there is compassion in him. He could be playing me for a fool as I am him, but my gut tells me this is who he is.

I am glad he has gone, having no idea what I should say or how I should behave around him when he talks like this. Infiltration and ruse are part of what I know and do, but this is a stretch even for me.

Guilt suddenly snakes through me—what have I got myself into? There are many orcs that deserve to die and that I would gladly send on their way. But I’m not sure he is one of them.

I am suddenly fearful of everything that I have told him about. In my attempt to infiltrate and build trust I have gone too far in the bond that it has created. Now I will have to think of how I can use that to my advantage. Maybe this infiltration has gone further than I or any of my team could even have imagined.

His words still swim through me. Words of peace and conciliation—coming from the most famous and ferocious orc leader. Surely it must be some sort of a plan. How can I believe him? How can I believe anything that an orc has to say?

My thoughts turn to my father, the victim of orc lies. Weeks went by after he was captured on a mission, and we were sure that he was dead. Until the settlement received the messages from him.

Though captured, the leader that held him befriended him, telling him and us that he would be returned safely to the human settlement, and spinning tales of possible alliances and co-existence.

Eventually he was indeed returned to us—with his head in a bag.

My father, along with other humans, had once believed an orc and had ended up dead as a result. Now I am to believe that the most formidable of them—one who has slaughtered so many of his own as well as countless humans—is intending to form some sort of alliance with us?

It is unthinkable.
